My Cultural Symbol ♥

Okay, so, here's my cultural symbol... As you can see it is very symbolic!! HAA! So I like my super big 'K' obviously standing for Keelan and I actually like how my 4 pictures actually look pretty good although at first I didn't think I would be able to make them myself. And I like my little silver/brown car!! ♥

One thing I don't like is how the edges around my symbol are a little uneven. The shape is a different one so it was hard to get all the sides the same size!!!

If I had more time to work on this project I think I would like to make the background shape a little more symbolic!!! Because a pentagon does not really mean anything to me.. It reminds me of a pencil.. which is SOOO not cool :)

Cultural Symbols Assignment

Symbol:
-something used for or regarded as representing something else; a material object representing something, often something immaterial; emblem, token, or sign.
-a letter, figure, or other character or mark or a combination of letters or the like used to designate something: the algebraic symbol x; the chemical symbol Au.
-a word, phrase, image, or the like having a complex of associated meanings and perceived as having inherent value separable from that which is symbolized, as being part of that which is symbolized, and as performing its normal function of standing for or representing that which is symbolized: usually conceived as deriving its meaning chiefly from the structure in which it appears, and generally distinguished from a sign.
Culture:
-the quality in a person or society that arises from a concern for what is regarded as excellent in arts, letters, manners, scholarly pursuits, etc.
-that which is excellent in the arts, manners, etc.
-a particular form or stage of civilization, as that of a certain nation or period: Greek culture.
-development or improvement of the mind by education or training.
-the behaviors and beliefs characteristic of a particular social, ethnic, or age group: the youth culture; the drug culture.
-the sum total of ways of living built up by a group of human beings and transmitted from one generation to another.
Ankh
An Egyptian cross symbolizing a mythical eternal life, rebirth, and the life-giving power of the sun. Wh the sign itself represents is often disputed. One interpretation that has been widely accepted was that it was a sandal. Egyptians called that part of the sandal 'nkh because this word was composed of the same consonants as the word "life", the sign to represent that particular part of the sandal, was also used to write the word "life".

Star of David
The star of David is a symbol of Jewish people. One idea is that a six-pointed star receives form and substance from its solid center. This inner core represents the spiritual dimension, surrounded by the six universal directions. (A similar idea applies to Shabbat -- the seventh day which gives balance and perspective to the six weekdays.)

Clover
According to legend, after Eve was banished from paradise, she plucked a four-leaf clover from the Garden of Eden and took it with her. Although cloves normally have only three leaves, the presistent sleuth can eventually find one with four leaves and, along with it, find good luck.

Olympics Symbol
Every rings stands for one of the five continents. Although there are seven continents, Antarctica is excluded and North America and South America are considered one. The connection of the rings symbolizes the connection of the continents during the Games and the ideal of peace and brotherhood of the whole planet.
Dream Catcher
If hung over your bed your bad dreams are filtered through the web and dissipate into the Universe; your good dreams remain caught in the web. Thunderbird thinks it is a shame to lose some of those bad dreams because those are the teaching dreams, and they have presented themselves because there are teachings and messages that need to be listened to. There is another school of thought that reverses the process by capturing the bad dreams and allowing the good ones ones to fly free.

The Recognizable Golden M Symbol is recognized worldwide as the fast food joint, McDonald's!! The M obviously from the first letter of their name.

Photo Montage

I actually kinda like how this turned out although there wasn't really too much to do. I like how it all meshes together to look really cool!! I really like the bed's displacement because it's simple and not overdone. Its

C-U-T-E !

One thing that bothers me is that it's kinda bland. The colours are very boring. I also don't like how there are so many colours and there aren't just a couple main ones.

If I had more time on this project, I would have liked to adjust colour brightness and saturation to create a more unique look. Also, it would have been REALLy Really nice to have more things to take pictures of in my room :( Oh well!!

A-Trees

1. In this article, it talks about how we have made things that calculate how we are affecting our environment.. mostly by global warming. For example, 'A-trees' lets us watch the growth of a tree on your computer screen. The growth of the tree is affected by the levels of carbon monoxide surrounding your computer that is measured by a real-time carbon monoxide meter. Another example of this is 'Stump,' which calculates how many sheets of paper went through your computer and spits that same amount back out in the form of a tree. These projects encourage us to see the environmental destruction we are causing the world.

2. - the fine arts collectively, often excluding architecture: art and architecture.
- the quality, production, expression, or realm, according to aesthetic principles, of what is beautiful, appealing, or of more than ordinary significance.
- the class of objects subject to aesthetic criteria; works of art collectively, as paintings, sculptures, or drawings: a museum of art; an art collection.
- a field, genre, or category of art: Dance is an art.
This classifies as art because it is a sculpture showing a deeper meaning to what we do in our daily lives. Instead of just saying that we waste TONS and TONS of paper, they use art to express it.
3. I think I like A-trees the best. It seems really, really unique and I like how the tree changes based on what's going on around you. That was a really cool idea! I think that 'Stump' is a really really cool idea but I think it sucks that it's wasting twice as much paper as you have since it prints out as many as you've used.

4. I kind of agree that the trees are not really alive when the trees grow and die in relation to the environment because then they are really only alive because of us. In a way, they obviously ARE alive but what they said really makes you think!! If the trees die based on us then they aren't really truly alive to begin with.

etoy.SHARE

1. This article is about trademark infringement that can easily happen on the internet. This article focuses mainly on a Swiss corporation called Etoy. Etoy set up an internet account in 1995 and and an online toy merchant called Etoy received a complaint in 1999 by a customer who accidentally visited the art website and encountered profanities. there was a big lawsuit and a online 'battle' over the name 'Etoy.' The 'battle' ended in January 2000 when eToys announced that it was dropping the lawsuit. During the lawsuit, 1,798 people came to eToy's defense by participating in 'Toywar' which let people drive down eToy's.

2. -The quality, production, expression, or realm, according to aesthetic principles, of what
is beautiful, appealing, or of more than ordinary significance.
-The class of objects subject to aesthetic criteria; works of art collectively, as paintings,
sculptures, or drawings: a museum of art; an art collection.
-A field, genre, or category of art: Dance is an art.
-The fine arts collectively, often excluding architecture: art and architecture.
This classifies as art because it was of more than ordinary significance. It channelled their creativity and was their OWN! What they did was to try and make people think also about other companies and how they act. They took art and dragged it just a bit further to add more meaning to it.

3. If I was the eToy artists that were being offered money to change their name, I don't think that I would. Their work was a piece of art and the owners of eToys had no right to tell them to change their name. eToy had registered its web address two years prior to the company, eToy which would mean that they really didn't do that much wrong. eToy was a way that they could show off they're creativity and they had already started it and were doing well. If they had given up they're name than they wouldn't have been doing themselves a favour. they were proud of what they had done and shouldn't have been asked to change their name. the work they did probably did insult some companies but it was not their mission statement or anything like that; they just wanted to show art that "crosses and blurs the frontiers between art, identity, nations, fashion, politics, technology, social engineering, music, and business to create massive impact on global markets and digital culture."

4. What they did might not have been the best thing to do but I think that it was good that they didn't give up on what they had started. I think that the 'toywar' was a little silly and kind of childish on their part. It's not something that I would do. Maybe talking to eToy and coming up with an agreement would have been a more sensible approach! I'm glad that they were able to keep their site running though.

Anti-Smoking

Okay, so... In my poster I wanted to get across that smoking kills!!! The effect was supposed to be 'BAM' so that you could easily understand it and realize what was trying to be portrayed. I like the idea and I like how the 'motto' is smoky and meshing into the background smoke.

One thing I'm not very happy about with this project was that having the animated smoke and the real human looks a little strange. Also, with this idea, there was little room to play around and add to the overall composition.

If I had more time to work on this poster, i would have really liked to add more. Or maybe even added in a relevant fact or something to make you think a little bit more. Something else in the background with the smoke would also have been nice so that it wouldn't look quite so empty.

SoundSculpture Reflection

My sound sculpture project really made me quite angry!!! But it turned out pretty well. I like the effect that it has on the viewer, evoking a strong emotion!! Also, the sounds that I found worked really well for my project! I like when my lady screams at the end!! SOooo Cool!!

One thing that I didn't like was that it was really hard to edit the hair in photoshop and not make it look choppy!! With so many different images, it took a long time to edit each one. Also, making the scissors move was hard because they were to different images: open and closed. Matching it up was pretty tricky.

If I had more time I would probably try to edit the images a little better!! Also I would have liked to put more sounds into it. Currently there are only 4 I think which is okay but I think it would have been better with more. Overall I liked how it turned out!!!

Anti-Smoking Poster Assignment Brainstorming

Sooo, for my anti-smoking poster I would really like to create something a little more original then the classic 'hang tough; don't puff' or anything else lame like that. I'm thinking about doing a scale with a cigarette box on one side and poison on the other and a saying like, "what's the difference?"
